Abstract The purposes of this research were to study level of stress, adaptation, emotional intelligence, and correlations between level of stress, adaptation, and emotional intelligence in first-year nursing students. The subjects were 97 first-year nursing students, Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Suphanburi. The data were collected in September 2010 by using a questionnaire assessing demographic data, Suanprung Stress Test developed by the Mental Health Department, Ministry of Public Health, a questionnaire assessing adaptation, and Thai Emotional Intelligence Screening Test. Data were analyzed by using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Pearsons correlation coefficient. The results of the study were as follows: 1. For the level of stress, 50.5% of nursing students were at the high level, 38.1% were at the moderate level, and 11.4% were at the severe level. 2. Regarding self-adaptation, most nursing students which accounted 67.0% were at the level of good self-adaptation abilities, 19.6% of them were at the level of moderate self-adaptation abilities, and 13.4% were at the level of very good self-adaptation abilities. 3. Concerning emotional intelligence, most nursing students which accounted 53.6% were at a normal level. For each category, it was found that 58.8% of the nursing students showed a higher score than the average in terms of goodness category, 64.9% of the nursing students showed normal average score in terms of smartness category, and 52.6% of the nursing students showed higher score than the average in terms of happiness category. 4. Among these students, it was also found that the emotional intelligence was significantly inverse related to score of stress (r = -.365, p < .01). In addition, the result showed that adaptation was significantly positive related to emotional intelligence (r = .639, p < .01).
