Abstractÿ
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the effectiveness of a smoking prevention program among middle-school students in Suphanburi province.ÿ The smoking prevention program was developed using the concepts of Health Belief Model (Rosenstock, Strecher, & Becker, 1988). Samples were 76 students, 36 students in the experimental group and 40 students in the comparison group.ÿ The experimental group received activities of the program based on the Health Belief Model and perceived ÿself-efficacy consisting of 4 sessions.ÿ Data were collected using a set of questionnaire and were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, paired t-test, and independent t-test.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ The results show that in the experimental group, the post-test mean score of perceived severity of disease from smoking, and health behavior was significantly higher than the pre-test mean score (p < .001), the post-test mean score of perceived barriers for avoid smoking, and perceived self-efficacy to no smoking was significantly higher than the pre-test mean score (p < .01). Besides, the post-test ÿmean ÿscore of perceived susceptibility of disease from smoking, and perceived benefit was ÿsignificantly ÿhigher than ÿthe pre-test mean score (p < .05). It was also found that the post-test mean scores of perceived barriers for avoid smoking, perceived self-efficacy to no smoking, and health behavior in the experimental group was significantly higher than the comparison group (p < .001), the post-test mean scores of perceived ÿseverity of disease from smoking, and perceivedÿ benefit ÿin the experimental group was significantly higher than the comparison group (p < .01). In addition, the post-test mean score of perceived susceptibility of disease from smoking in the experimental group was significantly higher than the comparison group (p < .05).
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ The findings showed that the smoking prevention program developed based on the Health Belief Model and perceived self-efficacy enabled the students to have significantly more positive perceptions and aÿ significantly more positive level on health behavior concerning smoking prevention.
